I started painting rocks to escape being stuck inside during COVID. I left them around my neighborhood. It was a fun way to pass the time, a reason to get out of the house.
After a few weeks, I noticed that within hours of leaving a new rock out it had disappeared. I would find it days later in a new spot.
One day I overheard two kids find a rock and yell, “another MOON rock!”. Their excitement was infectious. Later that week, I heard a couple talking about the “cult rocks” taking the neighborhood by storm. They seemed both concerned and amused. Then I started noticing other people putting out their own versions of the rocks! It was a real-life sociology experiment. I could see how people were impacted by finding a piece of art unexpectedly in their path while on a walk, hike, or waiting for a bus. It was beautiful.
I moved to LA shortly afterward. Life happened and the project died down. Recently I moved back to Columbus, OH, and have picked up art as a more consistent part of my schedule. I don't want "life" to get in the way of the things that make me feel alive.
My aim in everything I create is to make people pause for a moment and think (maybe even feel something!). Right now, this means leaving rocks and paintings for people to find out in the world. My hope is that they'll spread across the world. I have lots of ideas that I plan on exploring.
This website is where I keep a record of new projects I’m working on and explain my thinking. I’d love to hear what you all think. If you found a piece of art that impacted you, please let me know. I'd love to share your story with the people that are following along with this work.
